Samsung has officially ended update support for some of its older smartphones and tablets. As explained on the company’s website, this decision affects popular devices such as the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Tab S7. Users of these devices will no longer receive new Android versions or security updates:

  • Galaxy Note 20
  • Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
  • Galaxy Z Flip 5G
  • Galaxy Tab S7
  • Galaxy Tab S7 Plus

The reason behind this decision is that these five devices fall under Samsung’s older update policy, which only guaranteed new Android versions for three years and security updates for four years. With this period now expired, Samsung has decided to discontinue support.

Security risks and the need for upgrades

Owners of the mentioned models should consider upgrading to a new device. This is particularly important for users who use their devices for online banking or other security-sensitive activities. An outdated smartphone or tablet without current security updates always poses a risk.

Like other manufacturers, Samsung has steadily improved its update policy in recent years. For instance, buyers of the Galaxy S24 series will receive Android and security updates for seven years, allowing them to stay up-to-date until 2031.

In the past, Samsung has made exceptions to its update policy for critical security vulnerabilities. Updates were sometimes provided for older devices even after official support had ended. However, this is not guaranteed and should not be relied upon for security.
