Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro console. This new iteration offers significantly improved graphics performance, but one detail might dampen fans’ excitement.
Substantial performance boost
The PS5 Pro delivers 45 percent more graphics power than its predecessor, according to chief architect Mark Cerny. This improvement is achieved through a 67 percent increase in compute units within the graphics unit and a 28 percent faster graphics memory. Sony’s proprietary upscaling technology also ensures higher image quality without compromising frame rates.
In addition to technical upgrades, the PS5 Pro features improved heat management and lower power consumption due to more modern manufacturing technologies. Gamers can also look forward to optimized ray tracing, resulting in more realistic lighting effects and details. Sony claims that around 8,500 PS4 games will benefit from the enhanced performance.
New games and features
Alongside hardware improvements, Sony announced free updates for popular titles such as “Alan Wake 2,” “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.” These games will be specifically optimized for the PS5 Pro and labeled as “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” The “PS5 Pro Game Boost” feature is designed to display older games in higher quality as well.
The design resembles that of the “standard” PS5 but includes three parallel stripes for easier differentiation. A disc drive does not appear to be included. The new console will be available from November 7, 2024, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
The price of around 800 euros is significantly higher than many expected. Pre-orders are not yet available. It remains to be seen whether supply shortages similar to those experienced with the original PS5 launch will occur again.
