At the IFA 2024 in Berlin, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced its new standard called “Ki.” In development for years, this technology is designed to enable wireless power for kitchen appliances, similar to the “Qi” standard used for smartphones. The first devices, including products from leading brands like Beko, Bosch, Electrolux, Miele, Philips, and Samsung, are expected to hit the market next year.

All you will need to operate these appliances is a special induction cooktop. Once you place your appliance on the cooktop, it will begin to function. In the future, compatible transmitters will also be integrated into kitchen countertops, regardless of whether they are made from wood, quartz, granite, or composite materials.

Powering kitchen appliances through induction

The “Ki” standard provides a maximum output of 2.2 kilowatts, sufficient to power almost all types of kitchen appliances. The Wireless Power Consortium demonstrated the technology at the IFA using a kettle and a blender. You can view a demo of the technology on the Instagram page below.

Appliances controlled via smartphone

When the appliance is moved away from the transmitter, it automatically turns off. The area on the cooktop where the appliance sits will not heat up, making it safe to touch. Thanks to an integrated NFC chip, users will also be able to control the appliances remotely using a smartphone.

Safer kitchens without cables

The elimination of cables is expected to improve safety in the kitchen. There will be no risk of tripping over cords or accidentally pulling appliances off the counter. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about cords coming into contact with hot surfaces and catching fire.
