In recent years, the trend of adapting board games into films has grown, following in the footsteps of “Battleship” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” Now, Netflix is set to release a film adaptation of the beloved game “Werewolves of Millers Hollow,” which has significant potential.

As revealed in Netflix’s official YouTube trailer, “Werewolves of Millers Hollow” will be available globally on the platform starting October 23, 2024. The film’s concept is somewhat reminiscent of the “Jumanji” series, where modern-day individuals are transported into the supernatural world of a game. However, this film mainly draws from the gameplay elements of the classic card game of the same name.

While board games are rarely adapted into films, video games have more frequently been turned into movies. In a recent video, some of the most iconic game-to-film adaptations were highlighted.

The basic game concept of “Werewolves of Millers Hollow”

“Werewolves of Millers Hollow” is a social deduction game that revolves around bluffing and interaction between players (available on Amazon). Players assume different roles, being divided into either werewolves or villagers. These two groups must compete against each other, with werewolves trying to deceive the villagers.

What happens in the film “Werewolves of Millers Hollow”?

In the movie, a family visits their grandfather (played by Jean Reno). The father (Franck Dubosc) decides to bring everyone closer by playing the classic game “Werewolves of Millers Hollow.” What starts as an innocent, slightly spooky board game takes a dramatic turn when a phone unexpectedly rings. The round is interrupted, but the game set reveals itself to be more unusual than anticipated.

Before they know it, the grandfather, mother, father, and three children find themselves transported back to the year 1497, in a village under siege by real werewolves. Amidst panic and suspicion, suspects are put on trial, and the family quickly realizes that only by winning the game can they escape their deadly fate. The film is directed by Francois Uzan, known for his work on the popular Netflix series “Lupin”.
